The #Kittens Turn Two by Karen Rose Smith

Two summers ago on a hot summer afternoon, my husband received a call on his cell phone from a friend who had just found six kittens under her parents' front porch.  She was calling for advice on how to handle the kittens.  She had rescued two of the litter but it took another day before she could coax the others close enough to scoop them up and take them to safety.  She took the six kittens home and sheltered them in her basement, despite the fact that she was allergic to cats.  She also helped her father capture the mother cat to have her spayed.

Then began the arduous task of finding forever homes for the kittens.  My friend appeared quite smitten with one of the first rescues--a black longish-hair sweetie she had named Freya.  The other standout in the litter was the second rescue--a long-haired gray and white male.  Her young son named him Mr. Hat.

My husband's first big mistake was telling me about the phone call.  His second mistake was taking me to visit the kittens.  I hadn't exactly voiced my thoughts out loud, but I was planning to adopt Freya.  But as I sat in my friend's living room cuddling the little black bundle, my husband seemed taken with Mr. Hat.  By the time we left, we had agreed to take both of the kittens.  After all, they had just been taken from their mother, so how could we separate these two who seemed to have formed a bond?

The past two years have been filled with snarls of disapproval from our three senior cats, hours of playful banter with each other, and much laughter as we watched the antics of the newest members of our furry family.  The kittens have grown into beautiful felines.  Zander (formerly Mr. Hat) is striking in his demeanor and has become my best buddy.  Freya is a unique character who loves to be snuggled on her own terms.   They both have become cherished members of our family and are a constant presence on my social media pages.  And quite possibly they will join Zoie Joy, Paddington and Halo as "characters" in one of my mysteries.

Ebbie, My Rescued Soulmate Kitty by Karen Rose Smith

Sometimes an animal comes into your life who means as much to you as a family member or beloved friend. Ebbie was that cat who I had an instant connection with and a bond that I still feel even though she left us unexpectedly on September 23, 2014.

I rescued Ebbie from a friend's farm, but really she rescued me.  I have fibromyalgia and pain every day.  I was on an errand when I first saw Ebbie on a snowy day before Christmas in 2000. She was about six weeks old and sick.  We were caring for our own inside cat who had a thyroid deficiency and wasn't doing well.  My husband reminded me how impractical it would be to bring home a kitten.  But I couldn't stop thinking about little Ebbie, sick in the snow.

I went and picked her up a few days later.  I told hubby if she had to live in the bedroom so be it, but I wanted to adopt her.  The first few nights, I stayed up with her, massaging her sinuses so she could breathe.  She had a cough that was better when I held and petted her.  We took her to the vet before we brought her home and she went through 2 courses of antibiotics.  She and I were inseparable from the moment I brought her home.

A month later our other cat died, and we gave Ebbie the run of the house.  That spring, we adopted her half sister, London.

Ebbie was my soul sister and I felt my mom sent her to me at a particularly rough time in my life.  Ebbie knew when I was hurting and would lay on the spot that hurt most.  She was constantly by my side no matter where I was in the house.  She gave me head butts and kitty kisses and unconditional love.  I hope I did the same for her.

Last September 23 was an ordinary day when my cousin came for lunch.  Suddenly Ebbie was panting, couldn't get her breath and we rushed her to her vet.  She was only 14 but had congestive heart failure.  I lost a sister, a soulmate, and a best friend that day.  I couldn't let this day pass without posting about her beautiful, loving spirit.  I hope her amazing energy still surrounds us.  I hope she's watching over the fur babies in our care now.

I miss you, Ebbie, each and every day.  I love London, Zoie, Halo, Paddy and Sunnybud.  But no one will ever take your place in my heart.

USA TODAY Bestselling Author Karen Rose Smith is an only child who delved into books at an early age. She learned about kindred spirits from Anne of Green Gables, solved mysteries with Nancy Drew and wished she could have been the rider on The Black Stallion. Yet even though she escaped often into story worlds, she had many aunts, uncles and cousins around her on weekends. Her sense of family and relationships began there. Maybe that's why families are a strong theme in her novels, whether mysteries or romances. Her 87th novel will be released in 2015.

Readers often ask her about her pastimes. She has herb, flowers and vegetable gardens that help her relax. In the winter, she cooks rather than gardens. And year round she spends most of her time with her husband, as well as her four rescued cats who are her constant companions. They chase rainbows from sun catchers, reminding her life isn't all about work, awards and bestseller lists. Everyone needs that rainbow to chase.

Karen looks forward to interacting with readers. They can find her at the links below.

#Cat Trees, Cat condos and Cat steps (including cute cat #photos) by Karen Rose Smith

Anyone who reads my blogs or follows me on Facebook and Twitter knows that I'm a cat lover. I've had cats as companions since I was about eight years old which has helped me learn about their habits, preferences and needs. At the moment my husband and I are parents to three rescued cats--two are thirteen years old (Ebbie--a beautiful sable/black cat, and London--a gray tabby).  The little one Zoie Joy (a black feline with half a tuxedo) is two.

Just as we try to make the humans we live with happy, the same is true of taking care of cats and dealing with their personalities.  Cat trees, cat condos and cat steps help keep ours happy, healthy and contented.

It seems to be the nature of felines to want to perch high in a room to overlook the window, yards and everything inside.  A floor to ceiling cat tree can fit in a corner by a window and serve several purposes.  A cat can be high off the ground and feel safe.  He or she can share the space with a sibling and still have her or his own space.  Most cat trees are carpeted and can be used as scratching posts.

Cat condos come in all sizes. Some include a secluded space where a feline can feel secure.  Our smallest, Zoie, likes burrow holes to take naps.  Usually condos are sized to fit right at a window so cats can be entertained by the world outside without being harmed by it.  Condos are usually carpeted or covered with sisal for happy scratching.

Our oldest cat, Ebbie, hurt her back a few years ago.  She wouldn't move from my bed for about ten days, except to use her litter box.  I found a set of stairs she can easily climb to see out a window.  I've expanded them with a bench on one side and boxes on the other to give her a little room to spread out when she's hurting.  She didn't particularly like the steps in order to climb to the bed.  But she did like this hassock type condo for that purpose.  It gives her enough space to be able to get a good footing to hop to the bed.  (We move everything around to suit their needs and ours!)

Ebbie, London and Zoie use all of the above.  We've been collecting them for many years. Here are a few places where I found condos, steps, and cat trees.

In my Caprice De Luca home staging mystery series, Caprice is an animal lover too!  She takes in strays and finds them homes.  She has a long-haired calico named Sophia and has equipped Sophia with a floor to ceiling, turquoise carpeted cat tree which my cover artist put on the cover!

All-hallow-even and a #Lenox Cat #Giveaway

Energy surrounds us all the time.  But around Halloween, we're even more aware of it.  Who hasn't heard something go bump in the night when there is no logical explanation for the noise?  After a loved one passes, have you ever felt their presence?  On an important occasion or maybe a holiday?  Love is energy that never leaves us and I think we go on feeling it throughout our lives.  I have an antique chest that belonged to my mom.  Evey time I pass it, I remember my childhood and the house where I grew up.  Every once in a while, it seems to give off a scent that can take me back there in my mind...and in my heart.  When it does, it seems to be at those times when I need the touch of my mom's hand on my shoulder the most.

I think energy, a sixth sense and intuition are all closely related.  That's why it was easy for me to create a heroine who can find missing persons through their bonds with their loved ones.  In NATHAN'S VOW, Nathan asks Gillian to assist him in finding his ex-wife and daughters.  Although Gillian was recommended to him because of her success rate, he is skeptical at first.  But he learns she indeed has a gift.  He also learns that love is the greatest gift of all.

Halloween stirs up the pot of ideas beyond our usual realm.  Maybe that's why some of the images surrounding it are so macabre.  But "Halloween" means "all-hallow-even."  Maybe it's simply a night to celebrate everything we don't understand and everything we wish we did!

Lenox Cat Giveaway

As a memento of this All-hallow-even, I'm giving away a Lenox black cat that's 3 1/2 inches high.  All you have to do to get a chance at the giveaway is to leave a comment with your e-mail address on this blog, even if it's simply, "I like black cats."  I'll be accepting comments until midnight October 31 EST.  U.S. and Canadian entries only.  I have two black cats (along with a gray tabby) and they bring me lots of love and good luck.

Best,
Karen
