Why I Wrote About A #Hero With No #Memory

I've read amnesia plot lines in novels since I began reading romances. They are always intriguing. But then I watched a talk show about accident victims who never recover their memory.  What is that like for them? Are they the same person? How does their family react? How do they go on?

My hero will never regain his memory.  He started over and found a new life.  He never expects he can help someone else because of what happened to him.  He never expects to fall in love with the pretty doctor who comes to him for help with one of her patients and pleads with him to reveal his secret.

I hope you enjoy Clay and Paige's love story as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Dr. Paige Conrad needs Clay Reynolds' help. However, he can't give it because she and the rest of the town of Langley, Maryland, might discover his secret. Clay has no memory of the first twenty-five years of his life. The past and his father's rejection is behind him. Digging it up brings back nightmare he has fought for ten years to control.

After spending three years in underdeveloped countries following her parents' vision of healing, Paige has come to Langley to gain perspective on her life and help an old friend with his medical practice. Learning Clay was involved in a rock climbing accident and went through the rehabilitation process, she wants him to share his experience with a trouble teenager to give the boy hope.

Paige and Clay are inexorably drawn to each other. But can Clay trust Paige and share his secret? Can Paige dare to follow her own dreams.

USA TODAY Bestselling Author Karen Rose Smith is an only child who delved into books at an early age. She learned about kindred spirits from Anne of Green Gables, solved mysteries with Nancy Drew and wished she could have been the rider on The Black Stallion. Yet even though she escaped often into story worlds, she had many aunts, uncles and cousins around her on weekends. Her sense of family and relationships began there. Maybe that's why families are a strong theme in her novels, whether mysteries or romances. Her 87th novel will be released in 2015.

Readers often ask her about her pastimes. She has herb, flowers and vegetable gardens that help her relax. In the winter, she cooks rather than gardens. And year round she spends most of her time with her husband, as well as her four rescued cats who are her constant companions. They chase rainbows from sun catchers, reminding her life isn't all about work, awards and bestseller lists. Everyone needs that rainbow to chase.

#Cats This Week--Helping Out Or Sacking Out by Karen Rose Smith

If the Smith family felines weren't sacking out this week, they were "helping" out as only a resident feline can do. Paddington was on full alert as the bed sheets were changed, promptly "dusting" the clean linens with cat hair. She then surveyed under the bed to announce that a good sweeping was in order. She has also assumed "counter duty" spending countless minutes guarding the fruit basket to ward off unwanted fruit flies and keep us posted on crumbs left behind.

London assisted in folding laundry. She proclaimed that the towels had been fluffed to her approval and insisted on remaining for her afternoon nap.

Zoie and Sunnybud didn't seem to be concerned that there were household chores to do. They both chose to sack out and get some much needed rest.

Unfortunately, Halo had another "dizzy" episode this week and spend several hours at the emergency veterinary facility and also had a follow-up appointment at our vet. She is scheduled to be spayed and have dental work done on Monday and the vet is hopeful that curving the hormone "heat" rush every other week will help alleviate some of her health issues. We can only hope that she is correct.

Halo at our vet watching some of the resident felines outside the exam room.

There were some usual playful moments as well. Zoie and Paddy enjoy the scratching pad house. Zoie mostly seeks the shelter it provides while Paddy tries to figure out how to irritate her solitude.

I received a surprise package in the mail this week. A friend and fellow cat lover saw this garden solar light and immediately thought of me. It now prettily adorns one of our patio pots and peacefully welcomes our night visitors.

And despite her health scare, Halo found a few quiet moments to nap!

Ebbie, My Rescued Soulmate Kitty by Karen Rose Smith

Sometimes an animal comes into your life who means as much to you as a family member or beloved friend. Ebbie was that cat who I had an instant connection with and a bond that I still feel even though she left us unexpectedly on September 23, 2014.

I rescued Ebbie from a friend's farm, but really she rescued me.  I have fibromyalgia and pain every day.  I was on an errand when I first saw Ebbie on a snowy day before Christmas in 2000. She was about six weeks old and sick.  We were caring for our own inside cat who had a thyroid deficiency and wasn't doing well.  My husband reminded me how impractical it would be to bring home a kitten.  But I couldn't stop thinking about little Ebbie, sick in the snow.

I went and picked her up a few days later.  I told hubby if she had to live in the bedroom so be it, but I wanted to adopt her.  The first few nights, I stayed up with her, massaging her sinuses so she could breathe.  She had a cough that was better when I held and petted her.  We took her to the vet before we brought her home and she went through 2 courses of antibiotics.  She and I were inseparable from the moment I brought her home.

A month later our other cat died, and we gave Ebbie the run of the house.  That spring, we adopted her half sister, London.

Ebbie was my soul sister and I felt my mom sent her to me at a particularly rough time in my life.  Ebbie knew when I was hurting and would lay on the spot that hurt most.  She was constantly by my side no matter where I was in the house.  She gave me head butts and kitty kisses and unconditional love.  I hope I did the same for her.

Last September 23 was an ordinary day when my cousin came for lunch.  Suddenly Ebbie was panting, couldn't get her breath and we rushed her to her vet.  She was only 14 but had congestive heart failure.  I lost a sister, a soulmate, and a best friend that day.  I couldn't let this day pass without posting about her beautiful, loving spirit.  I hope her amazing energy still surrounds us.  I hope she's watching over the fur babies in our care now.

I miss you, Ebbie, each and every day.  I love London, Zoie, Halo, Paddy and Sunnybud.  But no one will ever take your place in my heart.

#Fall #Garden Beauty by Karen Rose Smith

Fall flowers and plants project their own beauty. Stems begin to brown from bottom up. But the flowers are just as gorgeous, maybe even more so than in summer. Zinnias have spread into four or five flowers instead of one. Marigolds have vibrantly spread along the border of the garden.

Snapdragons appreciate the cooler weather, pop up at unexpected places, and burst with pink, yellow, burgundy and yellow and white all over again.

Hummingbird mint is still attracting hummingbirds in Pennsylvania in mid September. The rose bushes have new life and are spreading with vibrant blooms.

More garden fall beauty manifests in the crape myrtle and ornamental grasses. The tall grasses shelter the feral and stray cats that roam through our gardens. We are readying their winter shelters. Yes, soon, the first frost will nip at it all. But for now we're enjoying the color and vibrancy for as long as we can.

#Cats This Week--Posing by Karen Rose Smith

I have picked up my watercolor paint brush again to find a relaxing pastime away from social media and writing. It's "me" time and what better subjects to use than the family furry crew? This week I finished a portrait of Paddy and Halo doing what they do best...snuggling together. It seems word got around and now all the felines are posing to be the subject of my next project.

Paddy in one of her more "adult" moments.

Halo poses in one of her few "awake" moments.

London poses in a "contemplative" moment.

Zoie unknowingly poses during her afternoon nap.

Sunnybud poses in a "protective of my space" moment.
Of course, Paddy was her usual curious self, always ready to explore anything "new."  She loves deliveries from UPS, high places and for some reason, this week, the kitchen counter.  I think she was watching the fruit bowl carefully to warn us of fruit flies that sometimes appear.  As you can see below, she did take time to "smell the roses"...or was she just trying to figure a path to escape with the bloom when no one was looking?

Zoie and Paddy were intrigued watching hubby through the living room as he was working in the front gardens.

Zoie also tried to disprove the theory that a square peg can't fit in a round hole! Despite her size, she still loves to sack out in small spaces.

And, of course, Halo slept through most of it!
