Why Do I Do #Booksignings? by Karen Rose Smith

When my first book was published in 1992, I did booksignings for a practical reason.  I received 1000 free books from the publishing company and I wasn't going to let them sit in my office. I learned about distributors and bookstores and had most of them placed. In addition, I scheduled booksignings to sell them. Back then, I decided I would advance my career by finding one reader at a time.

Life has changed since then. Now I interact with my readers on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram. But my philosophy is still the same. Find one reader at a time. When I began indie-publishing in 2011, I had to find a whole new readership--those readers who wanted ebooks rather than print. However, I still have readers who prefer to hold a book in their hand. They like to walk into a bookstore, peruse the shelves, and maybe have a book signed.

I don't do as many booksignings as I once did. But I especially like to connect with my local readers.  I still have a snail mail mailing list and inform them when I have a book signing locally.  Some of them have been coming to my signings for twenty years! Those are loyal readers. Those are readers I want to talk to.

The "soft" launch of GILT BY ASSOCIATION, my third Caprice De Luca Home Staging mystery, was on January 27. E-books began flying to Kindles and Nooks. I'll be having a Facebook launch party on February 3. But February 1 is the date when GILT will be available in brick and mortar bookstores. I'll be doing a book signing at my local Books-A-Million on February 7.

...Just because I think combining the old ways of connecting and the new ways is the best strategy for the future.

USA TODAY Bestselling Author Karen Rose Smith is an only child who delved into books at an early age. She learned about kindred spirits from Anne of Green Gables, solved mysteries with Nancy Drew and wished she could have been the rider on The Black Stallion. Yet even though she escaped often into story worlds, she had many aunts, uncles and cousins around her on weekends. Her sense of family and relationships began there. Maybe that's why families are a strong theme in her novels, whether mysteries or romances. Her 87th novel will be released in 2015.

Readers often ask her about her pastimes. She has herb, flowers and vegetable gardens that help her relax. In the winter, she cooks rather than gardens. And year round she spends most of her time with her husband, as well as her four rescued cats who are her constant companions. They chase rainbows from sun catchers, reminding her life isn't all about work, awards and bestseller lists. Everyone needs that rainbow to chase.

On Sale--CASSIDY'S #COWBOY by KAREN ROSE SMITH is 99cents!

CASSIDY'S COWBOY, ebook edition, is on sale for $.99.  It's a combination romance and women's fiction novel.  Yes, there is a hero--a single dad with a little girl.  Both need the love of the right woman.  But this is a book about Cassidy--a heroine who has never learned to read.  She's overcome adversity but not that.  The question is--  Can a CEO, who is also a cowboy, love her the way she is?  Or will he want to change her?

I wrote about a heroine in CASSIDY'S COWBOY who has dyslexia, a developmental reading disorder. I've researched the subject but I'm not an expert. However, as a former teacher, I've seen the effects of it. The inability to decipher the written word is a subject we don't discuss much.  But reading is such an essential part of life, I decided to explore the issue in this novel. As an author and a former teacher, it's important to me.

I had most of my experience with dyslexia when I taught second grade. This disability concerns the part of the brain that decodes symbols. I believe teachers are more aware these days than even a dozen years ago and reading problems are caught sooner. Early intervention is essential to help children cope. But children have slipped through the cracks for many years. In my case as a teacher, the learning difficulty manifested in my students with behavioral problems. When a child feels he or she can't keep up with peers, when a child feels he or she is on the outside looking in, if this child feels unable to learn, behavior changes. Acting out is common. So is sullenness or withdrawal. A teacher working with parents tries to find the root of the problem. Now testing can aid in this cause.

My heroine had a reading disability that was never diagnosed. Her history in foster care helped her slip through the cracks until teachers and caregivers just considered her a difficult child. Fortunately she found a mentor who took her under her wing. But instead of addressing the problem, she helped Cassidy learn to live with it. Was she an enabler or a loved one helping Cassidy cope? Because she finally had people around her who cared, Cassidy learned tricks to hide her reading disability from those outside her circle. She had a  great memory.  In the same way a child memorizes a favorite book, Cassidy used her memory to retain information and absorb it. She learned to duck situations that could reveal what she felt was a flaw. Imagine the vigilance necessary to remember everything--signs, instructions, the meaning of symbols.  Anxiety can become a huge by-product in fearing the secret of being unable to read will be identified. However, in the end, Cassidy has to reveal her secret to the person she cares about most--her hero.

Unconditional love teamed with a dose of reality wins the day in Cassidy's story.  Because I hope that can be the result for all of our children.

Release Day!!! GILT BY ASSOCIATION--#cozy #mystery--by Karen Rose Smith

This is release day for my third Caprice De Luca Home Staging Cozy Mystery--GILT BY ASSOCIATION.  Caprice has hearts and flowers as well as Valentine's Day on her mind in her professional house staging life as well as her romantic one.

BLURB:

Caprice De Luca's latest house staging is all about hearts, flowers lace and chintz since Valentine's Day is around the corner.  She never expects her client to be murdered in the greenhouse and day of the open house.

With her six-month old cocker spaniel pup Lady by her side and her own love life in disarray, Caprice ferrets out clues from the victim's best friend, Caprice's mother, the housekeeper and a special male friend who insists his relationship with the victim was platonic.  However, as Caprice digs deeper, she finds the victim's past is filled with secrets that she kept from her husband for thirty years.

The past isn't merely history.  The present isn't always what it seems.  When hearts are involved, passion and even murder aren't far behind.

I had so much fun developing this plot with its murder mystery puzzle and its touches of romance.  Since Caprice rescues a stray animal in every book, GILT BY ASSOCIATION is no exception.  Read about the gray tabby kitten who Caprice finds and dubs Valentine.  She is based on my own gray tabby--London.

I hope you enjoy all my Caprice De Luca mysteries!

Sneak Peek: GILT BY ASSOCIATION by Karen Rose Smith

I'm taking part in a Sneak Peek blog hop by my writer's group. GILT BY ASSOCIATION, a Caprice De Luca Home-Staging mystery, will be released on February 1.  Caprice is an amateur sleuth who likes vintage fashion, retro design and cooking.  Her large Italian family constantly gives her advice, but she follows her heart when rescuing stray animals and finding her Mr. Right.

**********

Caprice quickly searched through the first floor, then called up the wide stairway, "Louise?"

She received no answer.

Louise had said she was going to putter in her greenhouse this morning. Caprice gardened and her mom gardened even more. She knew how easy it was to become distracted by watering, examining, sorting. Maybe Louise was still in the greenhouse and was unmindful of the time.

"I'll check the greenhouse," she told Nikki as she passed her in the kitchen, her head deep in the refrigerator.

Caprice hurried to the greenhouse and saw the door was almost closed, but not completely. She pushed it open, calling, "Louise?"  There was no answer.

When she stepped inside, she spotted Louise crumpled on the floor. She let out a loud "No," ran toward the older woman, and stopped at her prone form, aghast at what she saw.  She was dead

What Inspires Me When the Writing Gets Tough by Karen Rose Smith

After seeing over 80 novels published, writing and living are interchangeable for me. They are so glued together that I realized while writing this that whatever inspires me for one inspires me for the other. Peaks and valleys in one affect the other. So when I think about inspiration for either writing or living, I can lift my heart in these ways.

Ever since I was a young girl, music has made a difference in my life. Until I was five, my parents and I lived with my grandfather and my aunt. After that they lived next door. I come from an Italian heritage, and my grandfather was an immigrant. He played the mandolin beautifully. On weekends, friends would stop by with guitars and an accordion, and he and his friends made music. That music brought into the house fellowship, fun and a sense of well-being. Also in my grandfather's house was a player piano. We inserted what was called a "roll" and a melody magically played. My mother and I would sing along. She played the piano herself, and I would accompany her, too.

It was natural for me to learn to play the piano myself. Through the years, I learned to express emotion through the playing. I found joy and inspiration in the music. With this history, I never just listen to a song. I feel it. Today I listen for artists and music which can stir that deep creative part of me, whether it does that by bringing back memories, lifting me to a mountaintop, soothing pain and stress away, or urging me to write a particularly emotional scene. I listen to a variety--Josh Groban, Burning Sky, guitarist John Williams, Michael Buble, the Beatles, Brad Paisley. They all touch me, give me creative energy and lift me over the bumps.

Traveling to a place with power also renews me. I believe everyone can find places that fill them with peace and an overwhelming sense of well-being. When I was a child, I had access to a relative's farm. There was something about the fields of grass, the scent of orange blossoms and honeysuckle, the playfulness of kittens around the barn and the beauty of horses in the corral, that always washed over me in a particularly healing way. I loved just being there and soaking it in. As an adult, I feel drawn to places where I can feel a power greater than myself--the ocean, the cliff dwellings in the southwest, the Appalachian mountains, the big blue sky over Santa Fe, a memorial garden my husband and I created in memory of my parents in our own backyard. All of these places, as well as the memory of them, fill me up when I am empty and help me to keep going.

Since emotion and my creative energy are also integrally linked, the people I love and those who love me also inspire me. My husband reminds me that I always say each book is different and eventually my characters show me the way. Talking to my son long-distance reminds me the bonds between a mother and child are never-ending.  When my BFF's daughter gives me a hug, I am inspired to look at the world through her eyes--in a more innocent, unspoiled way. My writing friends listen and help me get unstuck when a scene or character is being stubborn.

Also my four cats, Halo, Paddington, London and Zoie Joy are constant companions who remind me to be playful. Their presence fills me with a sense of contentment.

Inspiration surrounds me in many forms. I just have to know how to listen, where to go and whom to turn to in order to find it. Somehow I always do and life and writing flow on.

A Family Winter Tradition--The Nut Bowl by Karen Rose Smith

A family winter tradition--the nut bowl--sounds a little odd unless you grew up in an Italian household in the 1950s and 60s. Once upon a time, nuts didn't come already bagged and roasted. My grandmother would buy them at the Farmer's Market and then toast them in the oven. I can especially remember the almonds in their shells laid out on cookie sheets. My dad was a woodworker in his spare time.  He crafted wooden nut bowls like this one and gave them to family members.

Family dinner with guests were common back then--a weekend occurrence, not meals around the table just on special occasions.  After dinner, someone would bring the nut bowl and nutcracker to the table.  A meal never ended with dessert.  Sometimes we would sit and talk with family and guests for hours.  While we shared our lives, we would pass around the nut bowl.  As we cracked nuts and snacked on them, stories were batted back and forth as well as laughter.

I still have a few of the nut bowls my dad crafted.  When I spot one of them, I remember him more vividly.  That's what tradition is all about.

Cassidy has a secret. If she reveals to Ben that she can't read, can this CEO/cowboy still love her?
