#Feline Attention Catchers--#Cats This Week by Karen Rose Smith

Summertime provides the opportunity to spend more leisure time outdoors. I love a quiet evening sitting on the patio and enjoying a light breeze while sipping a glass of lemonade. Butterflies dancing in the warm afternoon sun add beauty to any summer garden. The sounds of birds in the garden and the buzz of the hummingbirds as they skip from one flower to another are soothing after a long day of writing and editing.  But these summer mainstays are also attention-getting distractions for the outside cats. This week I watched Bonnie chase up a tree after a chirping bird with Clyde sitting at the base of the tree observing her antics.  I also watched Bonnie as she discovered one of the first butterflies of the season as it fluttered in the garden. Fascinated and curious, she assumed the crouch/attack position and waited for the perfect moment, soon taking a giant leap into the zinnia bed after the yellow-winged monarch.

Unfortunately, we sometimes take the outdoors inside with us after an outside jaunt. Pesky flies seem to know when we open a door and buzz right through even the smallest opening. The buzz puts Paddy and Zoie on instant alert and a chase usually ensues until the intruder has been subdued and disposed of. Paddy always insists on seeing the evidence of the insect's demise before she resumes her usual indoor activities. One of this week's chases took Paddy to high places she doesn't normally climb--like on top of the bedroom chest of drawers.

Other animals are also a feline attention getter. One afternoon Paddy had settled on her fleece steps at the French doors. On closer examination, I spotted Clyde, one of our outside visitors, sitting on the deck. There was much less commotion with this visit than with a simple little fly. Zoie and Paddy also enjoy watching birds at the feeder on the deck. They send off a funny little clicking noise to signal that they have spotted a winged visitor.

Another afternoon, I noticed that Bonnie and Clyde were spending an unusual amount of time at the outside feeder on the patio. After they relented their vigilant watch, I tilted up the feeder only to find a chipmunk hiding under it out of reach of cat claws. A little nudge sent him on his way through the garden to safety.

Anything new or out of place in the house also immediately captures our felines' attention. The new cat condo was no sooner out of the box, than Zoie was perched on its shelf, staking claim to her new perch. And interestingly enough, Zoie has maintained that claim and spends a lot of time napping on the condo and using it to jump to the table for her feedings.
We can spend a lot of money on cat toys, but often the simplest things attract our felines' attention--the box a new delivery arrives in, a milk jug cap, a tin foil ball, a simple piece of ribbon. Just as we are creatures of habit, so too are our furry friends. They enjoy the comfortable and instantly notice the unfamiliar. Sometimes these distractions are long lasting, other times short-lived. And for us, they are just a reminder to appreciate the little things in life, to explore the unfamiliar and to deal with unexpected interruptions and then go about our daily routines as if nothing had ever happened.

Guess who Clyde is waiting for! A simple
little meow from Bonnie will capture his
attention and send him immediately to her
side whether it be for their evening meal or
a simple tousle in the shade of the
silver maple tree.

In my romance KIT AND KISSES, my heroine grows a
butterfly garden. This garden becomes a bond between her and the hero's special needs sister.
This is the first book in my FINDING MR. RIGHT series.

Karen and Paddy
USA TODAY Bestselling Author Karen Rose Smith is an only child who delved into books at an early age. She learned about kindred spirits from Anne of Green Gables, solved mysteries with Nancy Drew and wished she could have been the rider on The Black Stallion. Yet even though she escaped often into story worlds, she had many aunts, uncles and cousins around her on weekends. Her sense of family and relationships began there. Maybe that's why families are a strong theme in her novels, whether mysteries or romances. Her 95th novel will be released in 2016.

Readers often ask her about her pastimes. She has herb, flowers and vegetable gardens that help her relax. In the winter, she cooks rather than gardens.  And year round she spends most of her time with her husband, as well as her four rescued cats who are her constant companions. They chase rainbows from sun catchers, reminding her life isn't all about work, awards and bestseller lists. Everyone needs that rainbow to chase.

How #Tabby #Cats Received Their "M," A Christmas Story--#Cats This Week by Karen Rose Smith

The holiday season is filled with myths and legends explaining many of the symbols and customs that surround us at this time of the year. Since I am a feline lover, one of my favorite myths is how tabby cats got the 'M' that is often so prominent on their foreheads above the eyes. It has been circulating on social media, so I thought I would share it with you today, along with pictures of some very special furry babies who would do exactly what the cat in the story did to earn him his unique 'M' mark.

How Did Tabby Cats Receive Their 'M'?

All tabbies have an 'M' marking on their forehead, and on some this mark is very distinct. The 'M' is often referred to as 'the mark of the true tabby'.

There are several legends about how tabby cats got their 'M' marking.

Sunnybud proudly displays his true tabby 'M'.
The most popular of these legends tells us that when the baby Jesus was lying in the manger he started to shiver with the cold. Mary covered the baby with blankets but still he kept shivering. Mary then ask all the animals to move closer to the manger so that their body heat would warm Jesus. The animals stood as close to the manger as they could but the baby Jesus remained cold and shivering. After a time a small cat with tabby markings jumped into the manger and snuggled next to Jesus. Before long the baby had stopped shivering and was sound asleep, contented and warm.

In her gratitude to the tabby, Mary made the mark of her own initial, upon the cat's forehead so that tabby cats will forever remind the world of how they saved Jesus from the cold.

Halo loves the warmth of the bed and would have been the
first to jump in the crib to snuggle with the baby. Her gentle
spirit and wonderful maternal skills would have earned her
Mary's special mark.

London's 'M' was very prominent when she
was a kitten and, even though many of her
other markings have faded, her 'M' is still
prominent today.

Mason, Halo's second-born kitten also sports
the 'M' amid his beautiful facial markings.
My wish for you this holiday season is that you will be touched by the warmth and kindness of those closest to you and that their love will leave an indelible mark on your heart that will last a lifetime.

#Cats This Week--Catching Up With Paddy's #Brother Mason by Karen Rose Smith

After Halo delivered her litter of three kittens, we were left with the dilemma of finding homes for the new arrivals. Fortunately, the process became easier when two of my friends expressed interest in adopting kittens. Tia and Mason went to loving forever homes and have been the joy of their new families for the past year. Both families had other cats and Mason and Tia integrated well. Although Mason is five hours away, we receive occasional updates and photos. This week I'd like to share some of them with you.

Mason had a wonderful mother. Halo cared for and protected
her babies in a way that touched our hearts and taught us about
unconditional love.  Here Mason and Halo share a quiet moment
before Mason left for his forever home.

Mason has become best buddy with his new brother George. They are constantly together and George helps distract Mason's occasional desire to harass his two older "sisters" who would prefer to be left alone. But even George can't always control Mason's mischievous tendencies and Mason has to do some "time out"--perhaps an outside stroll in his carrier to give him time to regroup and reorder his priorities.

Mason is affectionate and loves to take his share of the bed out of the middle or on top of whatever "warm" creature is available. And as is evident in the photos below, he never misses a meal or treat call.

We are so glad that Mason has found a wonderful forever home. We know he is cared for and cherished. And from the photo below we can assume that he doesn't have a care in the world...other than being the furry friend and brother of a family who loves him to bits!

#Cats This Week--What's In A #Feline Name? by Karen Rose Smith

When a new pet enters our lives, sometimes a name is immediately apparent and other times we have to wait for the right name to manifest itself. Sometimes the appearance of the furry friend presents the framework for its name, other times it's a personality or behavior trait that suggests the name. This week, I decided to share how my feline family received their names.

Halo was a stray who appeared on our patio on Mother's Day. She was frail, malnourished and pregnant. We had lost a very special outside yellow tabby the previous September, but it was difficult to go out on the patio because Lancelot's presence was still felt. But the stray gave us new reason to spend time on the patio. It was almost as if Lance had sent our new friend to us to fill the void he left. Ironically, the stray had beautiful colors throughout her coat, but a ring of pure gold on the tip of her tail. We referred to it as Lance's halo and the stray became our Halo.

Paddy was the firstborn in Halo's litter. We witnessed the birth and decided the kitten looked very much like a little bear. Without knowing the sex of the kitten, we brainstormed "bear" names and settled on Paddington. When "he" turned out to be a "she," we decided to keep the name because it was endearing and just seemed to fit. So she became Miss Paddington, Paddy for short.

Zoie Joy was another stray we found in a bush in our backyard...on my parents' wedding anniversary.  I always considered her a gift from my parents. She was named after a character in one of my books who ran away to find her bliss. Zoie and I formed an immediate bond through the weeks of quarantine before we could introduce her to our indoor cats and she has found her bliss in our home. We added "Joy" to her name because of the joy she has given us.

London, the oldest member of our furry family, was born in a shed on a friend's farm. We chose her from the litter and had a few weeks to come up with a name because she was too young to be weened from her mother. A colleague of my husband suggested "London" because of the gray misty fog that often envelopes the city. It felt like a strong name yet, like the city itself whose royal grandeur attracts so many tourists, an endearing name as well.

Sunnybud has been around for two years but only recently has become a regular visitor. It took a long while to gain his trust, to get him to step into the basement and just recently to start to "hang" out in our sun room. As first, for lack of a better name, we just called him "Buddy," but the more he came and the more affectionate he became, we noticed the light yellow of his coat and the way it glowed when the sun shone on it. So we began referring to him as "Sunny" some of the time and "Buddy" other times. Eventually he became our "Sunnybud." Now he is our sunshine and we love the feeding and petting sessions, but know they will end on his terms when he is ready to move on for the day or night.

And just recently, we've had a new visitor at our feeding stations. She is a beautiful tortie with the most beautiful green eyes. This week, she watched cautiously as we talked to her behind the storm door, but she still runs away when we move outside. We have decided she needs a name, but the right one has not yet presented itself. So I would be open to any suggestions you might leave in the comments below.

Our pets are special. Their names remind us of where they came from and how they've touched our hearts.  What's in a pet name? Love, memories and a whole lot more!
