#Felines in #Fall: Sunshine and Straw--#Cats This Week by Karen Rose Smith

The seasons are now in full transition from summer to fall and the dynamics and daily routines of our furry family are changing to adapt to mother nature's new temperament. Arrival times of our outside duo, Bonnie and Clyde, has also changed with the shorter daylight hours. Morning feeding times are now slightly later since sunrise is later and after their suppertime feeding, they disperse to their nighttime lodging rather than lazing around on the cool evening grass as they did all summer. A lazy summer afternoon nap in the shade of the silver maple has turned into a respite in the afternoon sun for Clyde.

For the past several weeks, we have been preparing shelters for our outside feline visitors. Earlier this month, we placed straw bails around the shelters for insulation to provide extra warmth during the cold winter nights and plugged in the heat pads in the shelters closest to the house. This week we lined the patio with additional straw bales to help buffer the wind and drifting snow. Of course, Bonnie and Clyde had to examine the new arrangements and seem to have given their approval. Hopefully we have provided enough alternatives for them to find warmth and feel safe if and when the weather turns harsh.

Even though they are inside, Zoie Joy, Miss Paddington and Halo have also adapted to the changing weather. They are seeking warmer spots to settle for their naps. Zoie enjoys her condo at the kitchen window which receives direct sun late morning through early afternoon. Halo and Paddy search out the sunny spots on the bed and seem to bask in the warmth. I have also started to use my microwaveable heat bags to add extra warmth under the covers for them to snuggle against.

Putting warmer comforters on the bed and fluffing the fleece throws prepare us for the colder weather that is coming our way. Our pets seem to have that same instinct to prepare for colder temperatures. In our family, we just give a little extra help to make their winter season safe and warm.

USA TODAY Bestselling Author Karen Rose Smith is an only child who delved into books at an early age. She learned about kindred spirits from Anne of Green Gables, solved mysteries with Nancy Drew and wished she could have been the rider on The Black Stallion. Yet even though she escaped often into story worlds, she had many aunts, uncles and cousins around her on weekends. Her sense of family and relationships began there. Maybe that's why families are a strong theme in her novels, whether mysteries or romances. Her 97th novel will be released in 2017.

Fran's Yummy Baked #Apple #Recipe from DRAPE EXPECTATIONS by Karen Rose Smith

In the fall, the foods I cook and bake start changing from those I make in the summer.  I try new soup and casserole recipes in main courses and turn to spices I love best for baking.  One of my favorite spices is cinnamon.  I use it in this apple casserole. This casserole can be served as a side dish with dinner or for dessert.  I developed this recipe for my Caprice De Luca Home Staging mystery DRAPE EXPECTATIONS.  My sleuth and her family like to cook as much as I do.  There are recipes included in each novel.  Enjoy Fran's Yummy Baked Cinnamon Apples!

Fran's Yummy Baked Cinnamon Apples

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

6 cups sliced apples (I use Granny Smith!)
3 tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tbsp flour
2 tbsp butter
1/4 cup chopped walnuts
1/4 cup water

Slice apples and measure into a large bowl. Pour 1/4 cup water into 2 quart casserole.  I use one with a lid. Mix brown sugar, cinnamon and flour in a small dish, then pour over the sliced apples and coat them.  Blend in walnuts.  Pour all into the casserole. Slice the butter into thin pats on top. Cover the casserole.

Bake at 350 degrees about 45-50 minutes until apples are tender and can be pierced easily with a fork. Stir the apples before serving to coat more evenly in the cinnamon syrup.

Makes 4-6 servings, depending on how much your guests like apples!  And for dessert, you can top the apples with whipped cream or ice cream. YUM.

DRAPE EXPECTATIONS, Book 4

Caprice De Luca's former client and now friend Ace Richland--an 80's rock star--asks her for a favor.  Can she quickly stage his girlfriend's house to sell?  Widow Alanna Goodwin, a transplanted Southern beauty, will be moving in with him!  Immediately Caprice realizes Alanna's southern charm can be turned on and off at will.  Caprice agrees to stage Alanna's Kismet antebellum-styled mansion for Ace's sake.  But she soon learns Alanna doesn't have a genuine love for her cat Mirabelle and also uncovers a plot her new client is hatching to sabotage Ace's comeback.  However, before she can tell Ace, Alanna is murdered and Ace is the prime suspect.

As Caprice investigates, she learns Alanna had more secrets than pie safes.  With her Cocker Spaniel Lady by her side, she tracks down clues and adopts Alanna's cat.  In the midst of some of her own family upheaval--her uncle has moved in with her parents--she finds herself with a dilemma.  Grant Weatherford, her brother's law partner, advises Ace and reveals more of his past to her.  Seth Randolph, the doctor she dates, wants her to meet his family.  She must choose between them.

Danger stalks Caprice.  Will her refresher self-defense course save her life?  Only if she keeps her wits about her and Lady by her side.

#Fall #Garden Beauty by Karen Rose Smith

Fall flowers and plants project their own beauty. Stems begin to brown from bottom up. But the flowers are just as gorgeous, maybe even more so than in summer. Zinnias have spread into four or five flowers instead of one. Marigolds have vibrantly spread along the border of the garden.

Snapdragons appreciate the cooler weather, pop up at unexpected places, and burst with pink, yellow, burgundy and yellow and white all over again.

Hummingbird mint is still attracting hummingbirds in Pennsylvania in mid September. The rose bushes have new life and are spreading with vibrant blooms.

More garden fall beauty manifests in the crape myrtle and ornamental grasses. The tall grasses shelter the feral and stray cats that roam through our gardens. We are readying their winter shelters. Yes, soon, the first frost will nip at it all. But for now we're enjoying the color and vibrancy for as long as we can.

Fall in #Pennsylvania by Karen Rose Smith

All of a sudden overnight temperatures have dipped and it's really fall in Pennsylvania.  Soon the leaves will be turning magnificent colors.  Fall is a time to prepare for winter and we've started doing that in small ways.  The feral cat shelter has become overgrown with summer growth which is perfect camouflage for the shelter.

We have inserted an outdoor heating pad in another shelter closer to the house.

We moved the hibiscus tree from the patio to the shelter of a small porch to protect it from the cold nights before we move it inside.

Mums are abundant in PA right now and we've taken advantage of that to decorate for the season.

The leaves on a nearby dogwood are turning and our birch is scattering the ground with its summer foliage.  We still have a few sunflowers decorating the yard and the pampas grass is the most interesting this time of year.

Inside, I've added the chenille spread to the bedroom with my favorite quilt.  I've already started cooking soups and stews for the colder season.

There will be more seasonal changes in the upcoming weeks.

What does your location look like this time of year?
