A #Feline March Retreat from Snow--#Cats This Week by Karen Rose Smith

All winter I worried about what would happen with our outside feral cats in the event of a big snow storm. As we proceeded through a warm February with daffodils blooming and trees showing their new growth, I thought we had dodged the weather bullet this winter. Bonnie and Clyde spent most days in January and February roaming the yard and finding sunny spots to settle for an afternoon snooze. They came into the basement after their evening meal and spent their nights in the warmth of our basement. But each morning, they were ready to return to the big outdoor world that was their adventureland.

Then came the March snow storm. Weather forecasters were predicting twelve to twenty inches of drifting snow and frigid temperatures. It was time to place into action our winter contingency plans to keep Bonnie and Clyde safe and warm.

The first hurdle was to hope that the pair would show up for their evening meal on Monday so we could close the basement door. That part of the plan went well. But the question remained--how would they accept being closed in for the next two days?

Then overnight on Monday, the snow and wind began. We awoke on Tuesday morning to an outside world covered in white. Luckily the storm had tracked a bit closer to the coast than originally anticipated and because sleet had mixed in overnight, total accumulations were only about seven inches. But with the howling wind and continuing snow showers throughout the day, we knew it was not safe to open the door to let the cats out.

So Bonnie and Clyde remained in the basement. My husband and I took turns throughout the day spending time there with them. Sometimes, I worked on re-potting some of my newly sprouted petunia and tomato plants that are thriving on heat pads under grow lights.  Other times I sat with our feline guests (or captives, depending how we looked at it) with music playing on my i-phone. We played with laser lights and wands. They seemed engaged and entertained, tossing the area rugs to chase their "prey" or climbing the condo to follow the light. Each play session always ended in treats.

When we weren't in the basement, we left a radio playing softly on a country station on an old battery powered radio.  Clyde settled on his heat pad. To my surprise, Bonnie found an empty spot on the heat pad that warms my seedlings and took her nap there on the table.

Bonnie and Clyde spent two days in the basement.  This morning, after their morning feeding, we opened the door and offered the opportunity for them to explore their outside world that was now a frozen sheet of snow, iced on top.  The next question was--will they come back after being cooped up for so long? But a mid-morning check showed Bonnie sitting inside, looking through the cat door at Clyde who was exploring the snow-covered patio. Obviously they appreciate the warmth the basement has to offer...and hopefully the warm feelings we extended to them to keep them safe through a nasty late-winter storm. But through all the play times and other times we spent together the last few days, they still run at the slightest unexpected human movement and Bonnie still refuses to be touched or petted. Maybe we have made baby steps in building their trust and having them know that we are on their side. Hopefully the cold winter blast has fostered some warmth in their journey to once again accept at least two humans who care about their well-being and safety.

Just a little safety reminder: When choosing a salt to sprinkle on your walks and and driveways, always choose a "pet safer" variety. I found this product at my local pet store.

Coaxing #Felines To Trust--#Cats This Week by Karen Rose Smith

This week I feel we took another step forward in our relationship with our outside duo, Bonnie and Clyde. They have been visiting us for over a year, and last February after we lost Sunnybud, our other daily visitor with whom I had developed a special relationship, their visits became more regular and we began the long journey of developing a trust relationship with the sibling duo. They had clipped ears, which meant they had been captured, neutered and released. But that experience had apparently deepened their mistrust of humans.

Through last summer, Bonnie and Clyde came daily to our outside feeding stations and eventually to a feeding spot inside the basement door. We slowly acclimated them to enter through a cat door (with the flap taped open) and through early winter, they came twice daily for their meals. But they were extremely skittish and ran at the slightest movement. Slowly I managed to pet Clyde and now he likes a daily rub while he is eating, but Bonnie still will not tolerate human contact. Ironically, other than that, she is the more social of the two.

As the cold winter months arrived, we began closing the basement door behind them during the evening feeding and they spent the cold nights in our heated basement. At first they were slightly wary of the new arrangement but they returned each night for their safe shelter. I spent time with them in the morning before opening the door to give them the option of staying or exploring their outside world. They often remained inside and sometimes even returned for an afternoon nap. However, they still displayed a fear of human contact.

A week or so ago, I began leaving catnip toys on the basement floor to occupy them during the long night. Our trail camera caught photos of them playing with the toys and, in the morning, the area rugs were often crumbled from their playtime antics. This week, I decided to try a wand with a colorful streamer to encourage more direct interaction. Clyde was somewhat hesitant to engage, but Bonnie immediately took to chasing and playing tug of war with the streamer. Clyde watched from a distance, then joined in as well.

I also tried a pet light, which is a small flashlight-like toy that projects an image on the floor. Both cats immediately chased the mouse and the paw around the basement. This engagement seems to have marked another step in building trust. Now they hop through the door each evening not just to eat...but to play. Often they play before they eat. And in the morning, they often return to the basement when my husband cleans out their liter box, wanting to play again.

But...

Regardless of how engaged they are in our new interactions and how close they will scurry to capture the mouse light, they (especially Bonnie) still shy away from our hands and our touch. Sometimes we feel we are so close and yet so far from that relationship of total trust. But then we look into Bonnie's big green eyes and we realize how far she has come and believe, with patience, she will eventually accept our offer of protection...and safety...and love.

A #Feline Dream of Summer--#Cats This Week by Karen Rose Smith

The weather in the northeast has been crazy! Yesterday near record high temperatures had us grabbing the spring jackets from the closet, dabbling in the garden and enjoying a walk.

Bonnie and Clyde, our outside siblings, spent time on the deck outside my office soaking in the sunshine and tussling with each other. Then overnight everything changed.
We awoke this morning to snow and wind. My husband had to shovel the patio and paths to the outside feeders before I opened the door to let Bonnie and Clyde choose if they wanted to venture outdoors...or stay in the warmth of the basement. Yesterday's reprieve was just a memory and today they had only dreams of lazing on the summer grass and basking in its lush cushion.

Unlike the day before when the temperatures were abnormally warm overnight, last evening Bonnie and Clyde were waiting in the basement for their evening feeding and ready to settle in the basement for the night. It was like they had their own barometer and knew the weather was about to change.

The big question this morning was whether or not to open the door and give them the option to come and go as they wished. So while my husband shoveled and assessed the outside conditions, I provided Bonnie and Clyde with catnip toys and just watched them play. They tugged at the toys and engaged with each other on the carpet, although all along I know Bonnie was chomping at the bit to make the decision herself where she wanted to spend the day.

When my husband declared that it was safe to open the door, Bonnie was the first to the cat door.  At the opening , she stopped abruptly, realizing her outside world had been altered while she slept. Clyde eventually migrated to the door and it seemed that together they decided to venture out. But over the next couple of hours, whenever we checked the basement, Bonnie and Clyde were inside. At one point, Clyde was napping on a chair, no doubt dreaming of the warm weather that can only be a few weeks away...I hope!

#Feline Black Brings Joy--#Cats This Week by Karen Rose Smith

We all know the saying about the necessity of having that basic little black dress in our wardrobes. Our feline family also has its beautiful black member who has added much "Joy" to our lives. She has just a dash of white under her chin and on her tummy, suggesting the formality of a tuxedo.

Zoie Joy was rescued from a shrub in our back yard when she was just 1 1/2 pounds. From the moment my husband placed her in my hands, I knew she was going to join our two older inside cats. We named her Zoie after a wayward character in one of my romances and Joy because of the unexpected burst of Joy she brought into our lives.

After Zoie was cleared by the vet, she remained sequestered in our sun room until the flea treatment had a chance to take effect. Then the slow integration with our other two cats began, with Zoie first staying in my office, then slowly working her way into the rest of the house. She considerably annoyed Ebbie who was my soulmate and constant companion. She just wanted to play and do "kitty" things, but Ebbie didn't want her world disturbed. London, our other older cat, didn't seem to mind the new arrival. Even to this day, as London is spending most of her senior years in an upstairs bedroom, at night when Halo and Paddington (who she highly resents invading her space) are settled in my office with the door closed, London ventures downstairs, plays with a laser light with Zoie and and spends the night with her.

When Ebbie crossed the rainbow bridge, Zoie became my comforter. She immediately began to deepen her bonds with me and now I miss her terribly when she chooses to sleep elsewhere. I love falling asleep rubbing her tummy or holding her paw.

Zoie is the peacekeeper, the gentle one, who loves to romp with Paddy, naps on the chair with Halo (who is still at times protective of Paddy) and keeps London company.

Each member of our feline family has their own personality and they each bring joy in their own quiet ways. But Zoie has become my companion, my comfort, my joy. May all your furry friends always bring you joy.

Inseparable #Felines--#Cats This Week by Karen Rose Smith

Felines develop bonds that are as strong as the human bonds that we cherish in our everyday lives--siblings, spouses, parental, friends. All of these bonds are special, but occasionally we are fortunate enough to develop a bond that almost transcends the ordinary and natural and gives true meaning to Natalie Cole's lyrics:
Inseparable, that's how we'll always be,
Inseparable, just you and me...
Natalie Cole, 1975
In our furry family, we have witnessed two such inseparable bonds--one between siblings and another between a mother and daughter.

Bonnie and Clyde, our outside visitors have been inseparable since the day they first appeared in our backyard. We know nothing of their history, except that they were part of a rescue, neuter and release program, because they have clipped ears. It is obvious that they are siblings and have fended for themselves since they were released after being spayed and neutered. From their hesitance to trust humans, we can only assume their experiences at the clinic were frightening. They are constant companions and wait for each other to arrive before they will eat without being on constant alert. Clyde often sits outside the door while Bonnie is eating in the basement to protect her from other strays.

After a full year of interacting with them, Clyde has finally allowed me to pet him, but Bonnie still shies away. They have come trust us enough to allow us to close the basement door after their evening meal so they can spend the cold winter nights indoors in a heated area. We would never consider closing the door, though, before both of them are in the basement.

The trail camera has taken pictures of the two of them on a casual stroll around the basement in the middle of the night. They often sit guard for each other as one uses the litter box or feeds on dry food. In the morning when they hear my steps on the floor upstairs, they sit together in the middle of the basement until I come down the steps to feed them and open the door for them to begin their outside activities.

Halo and Miss Paddington's inseparable bonds had a completely different foundation. We rescued Halo as a pregnant stray and Paddy was her first-born kitten. We witnessed the birth and often assisted Paddy in finding her mom's nipple so she could nurse. Halo was a wonderful mother and has always been very protective of her babies.

When Mason and Tia left for their forever homes, the bond between Paddy and Halo seemed to become even closer. They ate, slept and played together. Paddy nursed much longer than the literature we read said she would. Two and a half years later, their bond is still strong. While Halo has somewhat pushed her away to fend for herself at times, they still sleep together at night and feed together each day. At the slightest disturbance, Halo is on alert, more than ready to defend Paddy against any aggression by the rest of our feline family.

I have watched in wonder at these inseparable feline bonds that have developed between Bonnie and Clyde...and Halo and Paddington.  They give me pause and incentive to look at my own relationships and truly appreciate the special bonds that have been and still are a part of my life.
