#Feline Duos and #Companions--#Cats This Week by Karen Rose Smith

Companionship is an important part of our human nature. We seek companions for support, for comfort, for love, and even for infamous reasons.  Famous duos from the past have become household terms--Samson and Delilah, Bonnie and Clyde, Ricky and Lucy, Lancelot and Guinevere. We also seek companionship in our furry friends. I happen to believe that cats, as well as dogs, are man's and woman's best friend. Our pets are always there for us and show their love and dedication in their own special ways. Zoie Joy will settle on the bed next to my pillow when I take a nap and simply reach out a paw to make contact and tell me that she is there. Halo senses when I don't fell well and snuggles in my arms to offer comfort. Paddington loves to sit nearby when I'm preparing breakfast just to "be" with me. Even London, set in her ways, waits each afternoon for my hubby to take his nap so she can snuggle next to him.

As I was gathering snapshots for this week's blog, I noticed a lot of the photos captured our cats together--whether they were napping, playing or getting into trouble. They enjoy each other's company and seek togetherness with each other as much as with us. If we leave for an appointment, to go shopping or visit friends, when we return home they are always in near proximity to each other, often sleeping on the bed together. They find comfort and safety in their companionship.

Bonnie and Clyde on the patio.
Our new outside duo who have been visiting our patio feeding stations regularly are extremely close to each other. They travel together, eat together and frolic on the hillside next to our house together, much as human siblings would do. Their camaraderie is striking to watch. We have named them Bonnie and Clyde because they are on the run but still have an amazing relationship.

In a photo from my archived files, I found
a photo of Halo before she came inside and
a protective Sunnybud. While Sunny was not
ready to become domesticated, he knew that
Halo needed our care and he watched over her
until she made the transition from outside to
inside cat.

I hope you enjoy this week's photos of our furry duos. Once again our feline friends can teach us a valuable lesson--appreciate those around you, seek comfort from them when you are down and cherish those special moments when they make you smile or simply want to be close to you...because they love you.

USA TODAY Bestselling Author Karen Rose Smith is an only child who delved into books at an early age. She learned about kindred spirits from Anne of Green Gables, solved mysteries with Nancy Drew and wished she could have been the rider on The Black Stallion. Yet even though she escaped often into story worlds, she had many aunts, uncles and cousins around her on weekends. Her sense of family and relationships began there. Maybe that's why families are a strong theme in her novels, whether mysteries or romances. Her 95th novel will be released in 2016.

Readers often ask her about her pastimes. She has herb, flowers and vegetable gardens that help her relax. In the winter, she cooks rather than gardens.  And year round she spends most of her time with her husband, as well as her four rescued cats who are her constant companions. They chase rainbows from sun catchers, reminding her life isn't all about work, awards and bestseller lists. Everyone needs that rainbow to chase.

How I Write A Harlequin Special Edition--#Family Themes by Karen Rose Smith

We all come from families who impact who we are, how we think, how we grew, played and learned.
I was an only child but descended from large Italian families. My dad had nine brothers and sisters and my mom had six. Weekends were filled with time with uncles, aunts and cousins. Relationships always fascinated me so I watched the interactions between and among relatives with interest. When I met my husband, I realized our marriage would never just be about him and me. It would be about how the two of us as a couple and later with our son as our own family unit fit together with both sets of our parents.

When I began writing, I had this rich, relationship background to draw on. Not so much specific situations, but the overall feel of how a hero and heroine fit in with their community and the people around them. Love doesn't happen in a vacuum. We bring our past and our present to the one we love. Somehow after the blush of first love, a couple must figure out how their lives and the friends and family in them mesh together. That's important in raising children.

In writing a Special Edition, I give my hero and heroine center stage. But friends and family provide conflict, character revelation, reasons for opening up about the past, as well as humor. The hero and heroine are the center of the wheel and the focus for each scene. The cast surrounding the wheel provide support, sounding boards and opportunities for secrets to be revealed. Balancing the cast is easy. The book is always about the hero and heroine's thoughts, feelings and journey to loving each other. The other players form the scenery along the way.

Karen Rose Smith's Path to Her 95th Novel in 2016

After spending 6 years writing 13 manuscripts, I sold two books in one week back in 1991.  My first two novels were published in 1992.  I've been fortunate to have 2 to 4 books published each year since.  Writing is a profession, a job I attend to every day.  It's never about a muse sitting kindly on my shoulder.  It's about outlining, plotting, connecting with my characters and their emotions on a daily basis.

I began writing because I had back surgery and was flat on my back for about 4 years. In those early days, I would write longhand on a legal pad, then lie on the floor with a keyboard on my lap.  I typed from pages clothespinned to a waste paper can beside me.  After attending a month long, in-house rehab, I got back on my feet but not without pain.  Diagnosed with osteoarthritis, arachniditis, and fibromyalgia, I spent my days writing to raise me to a realm above the pain.  Writing novels has always been a creative and emotional outlet and keeps me feeling productive when my physical activity is limited.

I've never liked or adapted to writing books on the computer.  When the fibromyalgia began affecting my eyes about 20 years ago, I started dictating my books into a tape recorder.  I still do.  I send the tapes to my typist and she transcribes them for me. (Soon I'll have to switch to a digital recorder and transcriber, but that's another blog story!)  During the editing process, I read hard copy over and over again until I'm satisfied with it.  My husband, my virtual assistant before virtual assistants were popular, puts my editing changes into the computer.  It's a system I've developed over the years that works for me.

The truth is that at this point in my career I thought I'd be cutting back.  But I've always felt I have to grab an opportunity or a contract whenever I can...whenever the project is one my heart wants to tackle.  Because my writing is all about relationships, families and friends whether I'm writing cozy mysteries or romance. My heart has to be in it.

This year I will definitely have four new releases--2 Caprice De Luca Home Staging mysteries for Kensington and 2 romances for Harlequin Special Edition.  In addition I hope to complete Book 8 in my indie SEARCH FOR LOVE series--THE WEDDING PROMISE. It's the sequel to HER SISTER.

2016 will be an exciting release year.  I hope you will enjoy all my books, visit me on my Facebook pages and Twitter feed, sign up for my newsletter and chat with me.
