#Feline Helpers--Making The Bed--#Cats This Week by Karen Rose Smith

Changing the sheets and making the bed can be a major undertaking in the Smith household...especially when we have three "helpers" who want in on the action.

As a matter of fact, any simple cleaning chore can become much more complicated when one or more of the furry family decide they want to be entertained in the process. Since she was a kitten, Paddington has loved to chase the broom and straddle it wherever it was within reach. She also loves to skid through the pile of crumbs before we can scoop it up with the dust pan, scattering it across the kitchen floor again.

Paddy, Zoie and even London seem to know when the first pillow case has been removed and they quickly appear and jump on the bed to "help" change the bedding. The spread, blanket, and sheets have to be removed carefully so a cat is not scooped up with them. They believe we are having an Olympic competition where they are being provided a marathon of hurdles to overcome. They dive on top of the spread, climb under the sheets and settle in the very corner of the bed where we are about to remove the sheet.

After the sheets are removed the challenge becomes one of fitting the new sheets without having a giant bump underneath. The newly outfitted bed then becomes a giant sliding surface for them to glide across from one corner to the next, leaving a path of cat hairs on a freshly laundered sheet.

Adding the flat sheet, blanket and bedspread are also a challenge. Sometimes it's just easier to leave a bump under the spread and walk away for a few minutes. A furry head pops out eventually.
And of course, the freshly made bed also needs to be christened with cat scents and fur. When all meets their approval, Halo appears and jumps on the newly made surface to continue her nap that has been disrupted.

Truthfully, the whole process is as much entertainment for us as it is for the cats. It could be a frustrating process that takes twice as long as it should, but the feline antics have provided us with many laughs and even a noteworthy photo or two.

Halo doesn't care about the process.  She just wants the finished product!

USA TODAY Bestselling Author Karen Rose Smith is an only child who delved into books at an early age. She learned about kindred spirits from Anne of Green Gables, solved mysteries with Nancy Drew and wished she could have been the rider on The Black Stallion. Yet even though she escaped often into story worlds, she had many aunts, uncles and cousins around her on weekends. Her sense of family and relationships began there. Maybe that's why families are a strong theme in her novels, whether mysteries or romances. Her 95th novel will be released in 2016.

Readers often ask her about her pastimes. She has herb, flowers and vegetable gardens that help her relax. In the winter, she cooks rather than gardens.  And year round she spends most of her time with her husband, as well as her four rescued cats who are her constant companions. They chase rainbows from sun catchers, reminding her life isn't all about work, awards and bestseller lists. Everyone needs that rainbow to chase.

Karen looks forward to interacting with readers. They can find her at the links below.
