#Cats This Week--#Sisters by Karen Rose Smith

I was an only child and always longed to have a sister. Now as I watch the sisterly dynamics of my feline family, I realize even more what life could have been like if I had had a sibling.

Halo has the best of both worlds. Since she joined our family as a pregnant stray and gave birth to her litter, she is both a mother to her fur baby Miss Paddington and a sister her adopted housemates, Zoie Joy and London. She seems much more accepting of her motherly role because it came so naturally to her. She is a wonderful mother and still comforts Paddy on a daily basis. She has been more hesitant in her sisterly role but is slowly becoming "closer" to Zoie, even napping on the bed with her. She sometimes gives Zoie a "sisterly" swat if they pass each too closely, but neither shows malice towards the other.

Zoie and Paddy developed an instant bond. Despite their size differences, Zoie looked to Paddy for companionship and was patient with her kitty antics. Now as they are closer in size, they still romp through the house and Zoie anxiously awaits at the door to open each morning to be reunited with her sisters (Paddy and Halo sleep in my office as they have since Halo gave birth.).

When they're not napping, Paddy and Zoie keep an eye out for each other. Paddy loves to hide behind doors or in the wastebasket and jump out when Zoie comes by. Zoie also watches for her sister, sometimes observing her playing with her catnip turtle or pushing an escaped ice cube across the floor. Other times, they chase the same ladybug around the house until hubby comes to the rescue and removes the unwanted intruder.

London was used to a quiet house with just her half sister . Her world was turned topsy-turvy, first with the arrival of Zoie three years ago and then with the arrival of Halo and her litter in the summer of 2014. Ebbie's passing that September left London in the sole role of older sister and, at times, she's not sure she likes that designation. She prefers the quiet of an upstairs bedroom and often gets annoyed when Paddy or Halo bother her.

Zoie seems to be the constant in the family...she gets along with all of her "sisters." Her gentle but vocal personality seems to calm whomever she is around.

Each of our "girls" has a unique personality and we are so proud to call them family. With our son half way across the country, our "sister" felines give us daily laughter when we are down and comfort when we are hurting. They are the sisters I always wished I had!

USA TODAY Bestselling Author Karen Rose Smith is an only child who delved into books at an early age. She learned about kindred spirits from Anne of Green Gables, solved mysteries with Nancy Drew and wished she could have been the rider on The Black Stallion. Yet even though she escaped often into story worlds, she had many aunts, uncles and cousins around her on weekends. Her sense of family and relationships began there. Maybe that's why families are a strong theme in her novels, whether mysteries or romances. Her 87th novel will be released in 2015.

Readers often ask her about her pastimes. She has herb, flowers and vegetable gardens that help her relax. In the winter, she cooks rather than gardens. And year round she spends most of her time with her husband, as well as her four rescued cats who are her constant companions. They chase rainbows from sun catchers, reminding her life isn't all about work, awards and bestseller lists. Everyone needs that rainbow to chase.

#Cats This Week--#Relatives in the #Kitty Kingdom by Karen Rose Smith

In human families their are many interesting dynamics happening at the same time--parent child, brother sister, sister sister--all of which give each family its own unique mark. Feline "families" are no different.  Each member of our furry family has developed his or her individual personality and blended them into our unique, special and irreplaceable family.

Halo and Paddy have their own mother/daughter bond that is truly a joy to observe. Human mothers can only hope to have that bond with their daughters--sharing and caring each other, having fun romps together, comforting each other, yet giving each other space to themselves.
Zoie and Paddy have definitely developed a sisterly bond, perhaps because Paddy immediately recognized Zoie's gentle nature. They enjoy tackling each other, racing through the house, teasing each other, but then go their separate ways. Paddy is slowly learning to respect Zoie's space as well as sharing it.

Just as brothers and sisters sometimes don't want to associate with their siblings yet when they are apart miss them, Zoie and Paddy often sit and look for each other in their lonely moments. Zoie seems to miss Paddy when she's not around, perhaps because of her protective nature. And Paddy...well she's just looking for someone to play with!

Even through Sunnybud's macho exterior, he shows his affectionate side...even though it only comes in short splurts.  I don't know if he sees me as a sister or mother, but I enjoy the bond that we've developed that makes him feel part of our family...even if he's not fully aware of his status as he leaves each morning for his outside adventures.

Sunny likes his independence but also likes someone to hug him, someone to feed him and maybe even someone to look up to...for more than food!

As the older sister in the brood, London was already set in her ways and was not always receptive to the new paws that suddenly appeared in her domain. She prefers to spend her days napping peacefully on a bedroom chair, getting highly perturbed if a little brown split-faced feline disturbs her. She looks forward to my husband's afternoon naps when she can crawl in the bed next to him for her own special bonding time.

Our furry family has its squabbles and each feline needs our daily attention attention. We have been very fortunate that our indoor "girls" have learned to respect each other's space as well as share their spaces. They have someone to look for when they are lonely and someone to look up to when they need comfort (or food!)

And, of course, Halo takes her nap, dreaming of how lucky she is to have found her forever family.  We know we are lucky to have found her...and her brother and sisters!

Sneak Peek--APRIL'S PROMISE by Karen Rose Smith

I'm taking part in a Sneak Peek blog hop by my writer's group.  APRIL'S PROMISE is my new release, the first book in my FOREVER LOVE series. April made a promise to her dying sister that now haunts her.  She has returned to her home town because...

Gabe needs you.

April Remmington could hear her mother's voice as clearly as if Winnifred Remmington were standing beside her.

Waiting at her brother-in-law's door in the dimming light, April rang the bell a second time.  As the October breeze tossed russet leaves around the pillars on the porch, she tried to lock the secret she carried in a tight box in her heart.

If Gabe ever found out what she knew--

After a few more minutes, she turned the knob and pushed the door open.  The sound of happy-go-lucky, children's music blared from the kitchen into the foyer.  There were toys strewn in the living room from one end to the other.

The half-eaten sandwich on the coffee table and the tilted-over tumbler lying on its side told April even more explicitly than her mother's words that, since Stephie's nanny had left to help her daughter, Gabe was having problems juggling being a CEO and a single parent.
