#Feline Black Brings Joy--#Cats This Week by Karen Rose Smith

We all know the saying about the necessity of having that basic little black dress in our wardrobes. Our feline family also has its beautiful black member who has added much "Joy" to our lives. She has just a dash of white under her chin and on her tummy, suggesting the formality of a tuxedo.

Zoie Joy was rescued from a shrub in our back yard when she was just 1 1/2 pounds. From the moment my husband placed her in my hands, I knew she was going to join our two older inside cats. We named her Zoie after a wayward character in one of my romances and Joy because of the unexpected burst of Joy she brought into our lives.

After Zoie was cleared by the vet, she remained sequestered in our sun room until the flea treatment had a chance to take effect. Then the slow integration with our other two cats began, with Zoie first staying in my office, then slowly working her way into the rest of the house. She considerably annoyed Ebbie who was my soulmate and constant companion. She just wanted to play and do "kitty" things, but Ebbie didn't want her world disturbed. London, our other older cat, didn't seem to mind the new arrival. Even to this day, as London is spending most of her senior years in an upstairs bedroom, at night when Halo and Paddington (who she highly resents invading her space) are settled in my office with the door closed, London ventures downstairs, plays with a laser light with Zoie and and spends the night with her.

When Ebbie crossed the rainbow bridge, Zoie became my comforter. She immediately began to deepen her bonds with me and now I miss her terribly when she chooses to sleep elsewhere. I love falling asleep rubbing her tummy or holding her paw.

Zoie is the peacekeeper, the gentle one, who loves to romp with Paddy, naps on the chair with Halo (who is still at times protective of Paddy) and keeps London company.

Each member of our feline family has their own personality and they each bring joy in their own quiet ways. But Zoie has become my companion, my comfort, my joy. May all your furry friends always bring you joy.

USA TODAY Bestselling Author Karen Rose Smith is an only child who delved into books at an early age. She learned about kindred spirits from Anne of Green Gables, solved mysteries with Nancy Drew and wished she could have been the rider on The Black Stallion. Yet even though she escaped often into story worlds, she had many aunts, uncles and cousins around her on weekends. Her sense of family and relationships began there. Maybe that's why families are a strong theme in her novels, whether mysteries or romances. Her 97th novel will be released in 2017.
Karen and Paddy

Readers often ask her about her pastimes. She has herb, flowers and vegetable gardens that help her relax. In the winter, she cooks rather than gardens.  And year round she spends most of her time with her husband, as well as her four rescued cats who are her constant companions. They chase rainbows from sun catchers, reminding her life isn't all about work, awards and bestseller lists. Everyone needs that rainbow to chase.

Karen looks forward to interacting with readers. They can find her at the links below.

  1. She is a beautiful soul. Every kitty has a personality, but black kitties seem to be the most unique of all!

  2. I love my fur babies. I have Tia who is a black and white cat. I also have a orange cat named Lucy. My adorable black cat Maddie disappeared a few months ago. I still miss her. I enjoyed your blog. I hope you have a great weekend!

  3. They are all beautiful, I've never had a black cat, both of my sisters have, I think they are gorgeous, so elegant. The cats I have are ones that have pretty much strolled into our lives. Sparta who passed last year, we took from a friend who's cat had kittens. Neris was a stray my daughter found who has also passed around 9 years ago now. Osaka strolled in the door as a tiny black and white furball kitten while we were in the middle of moving he is my perpetual instigator and I love him to pieces. Kalispell my daughter had a bond with through the Pet Smart window for cat adoptions, we couldn't deny her, they do seem to have some unseen bond and she is such a sweetheart however she hates Osaka, with reason (the perpetual instigator) but she does like the dog and he watches out for her. If a black cat comes strolling in it will be loved along with the rest (the dog was a stroll in too). I ramble. Thanks for your pictures!

  4. I've had two all black cats, one a Persian - Aeriel - and one an Exotic - Tobey. Aeriel was a snuggler and mischief maker but so stinking cute with her big orange eyes and smooshed face I could never be mad at her. She's been gone quite a while now, and I admit I was looking for a similar purrsonality when I found Tobey. He's very different, of course. Not a snuggler except that he wants to get beside me when he wants it. Also big orange eyes in a smooshed face. We've had all different kinds and colors of cats, but I definitely have a special soft spot for black kitties.
