After Zoie was cleared by the vet, she remained sequestered in our sun room until the flea treatment had a chance to take effect. Then the slow integration with our other two cats began, with Zoie first staying in my office, then slowly working her way into the rest of the house. She considerably annoyed Ebbie who was my soulmate and constant companion. She just wanted to play and do "kitty" things, but Ebbie didn't want her world disturbed. London, our other older cat, didn't seem to mind the new arrival. Even to this day, as London is spending most of her senior years in an upstairs bedroom, at night when Halo and Paddington (who she highly resents invading her space) are settled in my office with the door closed, London ventures downstairs, plays with a laser light with Zoie and and spends the night with her.
When Ebbie crossed the rainbow bridge, Zoie became my comforter. She immediately began to deepen her bonds with me and now I miss her terribly when she chooses to sleep elsewhere. I love falling asleep rubbing her tummy or holding her paw.
Zoie is the peacekeeper, the gentle one, who loves to romp with Paddy, naps on the chair with Halo (who is still at times protective of Paddy) and keeps London company.
Each member of our feline family has their own personality and they each bring joy in their own quiet ways. But Zoie has become my companion, my comfort, my joy. May all your furry friends always bring you joy.

Readers often ask her about her pastimes. She has herb, flowers and vegetable gardens that help her relax. In the winter, she cooks rather than gardens. And year round she spends most of her time with her husband, as well as her four rescued cats who are her constant companions. They chase rainbows from sun catchers, reminding her life isn't all about work, awards and bestseller lists. Everyone needs that rainbow to chase.
USA TODAY Bestselling Author Karen Rose Smith is an only child who delved into books at an early age. She learned about kindred spirits from Anne of Green Gables, solved mysteries with Nancy Drew and wished she could have been the rider on The Black Stallion. Yet even though she escaped often into story worlds, she had many aunts, uncles and cousins around her on weekends. Her sense of family and relationships began there. Maybe that's why families are a strong theme in her novels, whether mysteries or romances. Her 97th novel will be released in 2017.
